Cratere Burckle
Il cratere Burckle è un ipotetico cratere meteoritico sottomarino che sarebbe stato creato dalla collisione di un asteroide o una cometa con la Terra in un'epoca stimata attorno al 2.800-3.000 a. C.[1][2]. Il suo diametro si ritiene sia di 29 km, ossia 25 volte maggiore di quello del Meteor crater[3]: il cratere dovrebbe essere situato a circa 3.800 metri di profondità, sul fondale dell'Oceano Indiano meridionale, alle coordinate 30° 51' 54" Sud e 61° 21' 54" Est, in un'area situata tra il Madagascar e l'Australia occidentale: la sua posizione è stata stimata nel 2006 dal team del Holocene Impact Working Group triangolando le dune di depositi sedimentari chevron (crevron dune in inglese) in Madagascar e in Australia.
Formazione[modifica]
I ricercatori dell'Holocene Impact Working Group ha ipotizzato che il Cratere Burckle sia stato generato circa 5.000 anni fa (circa 2800-3000 a. C.), durante l'Olocene, dall'impatto di una cometa sull'Oceano Indiano. I ricercatori sono giunti a tale conclusione analizzando grandi dune di depositi sedimentari a forma di cuneo, presenti in Australia e Madagascar, che sarebbero testimonianza degli enormi tsunami che si sarebbero verificati in conseguenza dell'impatto. La loro distribuzione geografica avrebbe permesso loro di identificare il punto dell'impatto e, ipoteticamente, il cratere[4].
Ricerche successive tuttavia tendono ad escludere la veridicità di questa teoria. Analisi più approfondite hanno infatti indicato che l'orientazione delle formazioni lungo la costa meridionale del Madagascar non concorderebbe con i modelli di mega-tsunami calcolati dai computer.
